The Iconic Fair
Around February each year, Reed Exhibition Australia runs the, “Reed Gift Fair”. This unique event is where buyers come to be inspired, meet with industry suppliers and source the latest products in the gifts, homeware and styling, furniture and lighting sectors.
Held at the Sydney Convention Centre, this is by far the biggest event in NSW, and in conjunction with Life InStyle, they bring a combined 750+ exhibitors into the centre of the city. Exhibitors, however, have broad remit with only about 50% of the event is focussed on interior design and decoration.
As a trade fair, this event is very much targeted at large buyers and as such isn’t trend specific or particularly sophisticated from a design perspective. However, I like to go every year and see if there are any higher-end new entrants, and who is doing anything differently.
As such I wanted to share my top pick from 2017 Reed Gift Fair:
Canvass + Sasson – furniture, homewares and accessories that embrace the classic and bohemian look, perfect for a sophisticated beachy look / feel (check out my Coastal Chic: A New Take on Beach Style here). Based in Victoria C+S are great at putting together small pieces of furniture, lighting, throws, cushions and rugs, with beautiful colours, textures and patterns.
Gallery Direct – Established in the UK in the ‘70s, Gallery Direct has grown into a huge global player in furniture, home décor and accessories, covering 18 countries. Their portfolio cover brands such as: Gallery Home, Hudson Living, Parisian House, Kilburn and Scott and Frank Hudson, and they bring an interesting yet subtle English twist to the furnishings and fabrics.
MRD Home – A great mix of Modern Australian with a European touch, and some Asian accents for good measure. In other words, eclectic, perfect for the light filled, cosmopolitan lifestyle we enjoy in Australia. MRD home supplies Furniture, Textiles, Decorator Accessories and of course Lighting, which is where I love to use them, as their free-standing designs are unique and modern.
Sounds Like Home – provides functional and innovative homewares, furniture (including Mamagreen outdoor furniture), and wall-art. Due to the nature of the show, Sounds Like Home focused their stand on homewares and wall art, with a native twist. I tend to use these guys for their great range of solid American oak furniture, so it was nice to see something a bit different.
Zaffero – moving away from the retail market, these guys are new to the trade design world. They design and manufacture their own range of special edition furniture pieces and beautiful and is fascinating bespoke lights, which were a stand out for me. Their hand-crafted lighting has a high-quality, special and commercial feel (think high-end bars, restaurants, and boutique hotels).
A quick note on trade only. In the interior design industry, we focus on high quality suppliers who are 100% focused on their awesome products and or services. Due to that, they simplify their business models by doing business through the trade only network. This means they don’t need retail stores, customer services teams, fancy showroom etc… instead they use designers, like me, to use their products.
